La Liga side Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic, according to ESPN FC.

The reliable news outlet reports on their website that the 23-year-old – who is currently on loan at Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin – is wanted by the Spanish club as a replacement for their midfielder Rodri, who is being chased by Manchester City.

The report adds that the Reds are demanding £34.6 million for the player – who stands at 6ft 3in [Transfermarkt] – whose contract at Anfield expires in 2023.

OPINION

Letting Grujic leave on a permanent basis is possibly the best thing the club could do this summer. Whether it be to Hertha Berlin or Atletico Madrid, it is clear that the Serbia international is not going to feature in Jurgen Klopp’s plans for the first team any time soon. His position is currently occupied by the likes of Fabinho, Naby Keita, Gini Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson – so the likelihood of him getting minutes is very slim, especially with competition as rife as it is. He will want to have regular game time, and that is something that he is definitely not going to get at Liverpool anytime soon. There is no denying his quality, but at the moment, Liverpool is too much of a step up for him. Joining the likes of Atletico, however, could just be the thing to set his career alight – so the Reds must ensure that he goes to the right club this summer.
