Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is back in training ahead of the clash against Huddersfield on Friday, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

The 29-year-old has missed the previous two clashes – against Chelsea and Cardiff – through a bout of illness, but he could likely play a part in this must win fixture after making a return to training.

The manager also confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was back in training alongside his Croatian teammate after having missed the entirety of the season so far with injury.

“The others we will see, Ox trained, all good,” he said, as quoted by Goal journalist Neil Jones on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

To be quite honest, having Lovren back in training is not news that will leave many Liverpool fans overjoyed. Yes, it means that there is extra cover for the centre-back role, but the likelihood of him playing is very slim indeed. Joel Matip has taken over the role in admirable fashion, and the fact that Joe Gomez has returned to the fold means that his chances would have decreased even further. Just where does his first team future lie now that Gomez is back in the mix of things? It looks very bleak, and unfortunately for him, there is not much he can do about that. That being said though, it will still be a boost for Klopp. He needs cover in that area, even if Lovren is low down the pecking order. It is hard to see Lovren playing again this season with the players in front of him – so who knows what next term will hold for him.
