Liverpool midfielder James Milner has revealed that he will be supporting Manchester United ‘for the first time in my life’ on Wednesday.

The Red Devils take on the champions in a huge Manchester derby as the Premier League title race continues to hot up, and Jurgen Klopp’s men will undoubtedly be hoping for a favour from their hated rivals United.

However Milner shared that while he will root for Manchester United against Man City, he won’t watch the game as it will be a waste of his energy.

“First time in my life,” Milner said, as per Sky Sports, when asked if he’d be supporting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. “But I won’t be watching. It’s a bit of a waste of energy, willing the ball in the other goal.

“I can’t do anything about it. I’ll maybe put my phone away for a few hours and check it after. I’ve no idea what I’ll do, maybe go out for some food.”

OPINION

Milner’s attitude likely represents that of every Liverpool player, member of staff and supporter on Wednesday. Everyone of a Red persuasion on Merseyside will undoubtedly be willing United on against City, which is not something that will be said very often at all. However, the supporters likely won’t be joining Milner in not watching the game on Wednesday. There’s no doubt that the Liverpool faithful will be watching eagerly to see if United can pull off what looks like the unthinkable at the moment. United are obviously in woeful form, having just been brutalised by Everton, so it’s extremely difficult to see them getting anything from the game. However, miracles do happen and teams usually raise their games for derby matches. So it’s not impossible, just highly unlikely at this moment in time. Having said that, the Liverpool supporters will still be urging United on nonetheless. Let’s wait and see what happens.
