John Motson boldly predicted Southampton to beat Liverpool 2-1 when the Premier League pair clash on Friday night.

The legendary commentator is drastically behind Andy Jacobs in talkSPORT’s prediction game and shared he was feeling like taking a slight punt by backing the Saints as a result.

However Motson did point out that he was previously going to back the Saints to earn a draw anyway as he feels that they are playing with confidence.

“I’m agreeing with Andy (Reds could slip up), there is going to be a chink somewhere in Liverpool’s armour, I get the feeling Southampton are playing with a lot of confidence, I was going to go with a draw but in an attempt to try and catch Andy Jacobs, which is like saying Chelsea to win the league, I’m going to go for a slight punt on a Saints win,” said Motson on talkSPORT (14:50, Friday April 5th).

“2-1 the Saints.”

OPINION

All Liverpool fans will be hoping Motson has made a mistake by backing the Saints on Friday. With the race for the Premier League title as intense as ever between the Reds and Man City, Jurgen Klopp’s side can’t afford to drop points. While Motson is spot-on to claim the Saints are playing with confidence currently after some morale-boosting performances, the Reds have more than enough quality to burst their bubble.  Klopp knows that if his side bring their A-game then the Saints will have no answer for them. The only worry about that is the fact the Reds haven’t exactly been knocking out the park recently. The Reds squeaked out another win against Tottenham on Sunday, but their last-gasp winner was very fortunate to say the least. If Hugo Lloris wouldn’t have made such an avoidable error between the sticks for Spurs, then the Reds would have dropped vital points against them. Although despite this it’s still bold of Motson to go against the Reds as they’ve only lost one league game all season.
