Charlie Nicholas has predicted that Liverpool will progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League by drawing 1-1 with Porto at Estadio do Dragao on Wednesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s men won the first-leg 2-0 at Anfield, and although it is not the most comfortable of leads, Nicholas has suggested that the Reds boss could make some changes to his starting line-up ahead of the second-leg showdown in Portugal.

“In reality, Liverpool could make changes to the team in this one, but they do not want to take advantage, especially if they go a goal down,” Nicholas said on the Sky Sports website.

“Mohamed Salah is back in form and Sadio Mane scored again at the weekend, while Roberto Firmino has been the best of the attacking players recently.

“He may not take any chances but he may change the midfield. It will be awkward but Liverpool will get the job done and be comfortable towards the end in this one.”

Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino scored the two goals for Liverpool in the first-leg and if they manage to win on aggregate on Wednesday night, they will face either Manchester United or Barcelona in the semi-finals.

OPINION

It is unlikely that Klopp will make that many changes for this game. He could bring in Georginio Wijnaldum to replace Jordan Henderson after he suffered a knock against Chelsea on Sunday, but that might be all that Klopp does so that he doesn’t disrupt the momentum that his team has found in the last few weeks. Liverpool are on a roll and even though they are 2-0 up on aggregate at this stage, they still should try to win this fixture. If they win against Porto in Portugal, then that could bode well for the rest of the season. Liverpool have what could be a banana skin for them on Sunday when they take on Cardiff in South Wales. Neil Warnock’s men are fighting for their lives and providing stiff competition for their opponents lately. It should be a win for Liverpool, and they stand a much better chance of winning that and keeping up their Premier League title bid if they beat Porto on Wednesday night. It’s all about form and momentum at this stage of the campaign.
