Former Liverpool left back John Arne Riise has claimed that his eventual successor Andrew Robertson is one of the best in the world at his position.

The Norwegian held down the left back spot at Anfield for seven years between 2001 and 2008, and now he believes the Scotland international is the next great Reds left back.

“To be honest, the way football is played now Andy Robertson is up there because of his energy and his way of going forward,” Riise told Goal when asked who the best in the world at the position is. “Robertson is more [an example of] today’s modern football full-back.

“You need to be able to run up and down, make crosses, make assists, shoot, and also be good defensively. He’s like the perfect modern left-back. I’m a big fan.”

OPINION

Riise is absolutely spot on, here. Robertson has improved so much since moving to Anfield and must now be considered one of, if not the best left back in world football. When you think about the top left backs in the game there aren’t too many who you would rank ahead of the Scotsman. There’s the likes of Marcelo, Alex Sandro and David Alaba who you could put in the mix, but at this moment in time none of them are playing at the level of the former Hull City man. He is extremely well rounded, capable of defending absolutely tremendously as well as being phenomenal going forward. His crossing is superb and he provides so much from an attacking point of view. You could see how much he was missed when he was suspended for the first leg against Porto last Tuesday. James Milner did a decent job but he’s just not as dynamic as Robertson at left back. There’s no doubt about it, Robertson is one of the best left backs in world football.
