Everton manager Marco Silva has claimed that Toffees left back Lucas Digne is better than his Liverpool counterpart Andrew Robertson.

The two players have been among the best at the position in the Premier League this season – arguably the two best – but Silva, naturally, has given the edge to the Frenchman.

“If he is the best one? Always I will push for my players but Lucas is there in the top list of the best left-backs,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “Robertson is a very good one also. He is a fantastic boy, a fantastic professional.

“He is our rival but he deserves everything he is achieving in his career but Lucas is Lucas, and Lucas, for me, is the best one because he is our player and playing in our blue shirt. We are really happy with him, he is enjoying his football and our fans love him and he has been everything we expected when we signed a player such as him.”

OPINION

Silva is, as you’d expect, sticking up for his guy and giving his player the edge here. However, anyone who has watched the two left backs this season knows that Robertson is the better choice. The Scotland international, to put it simply, is everything you could want in a modern full back. He is dogged in his defensive duties, but also extremely dangerous going forward. He is a wonderful crosser of the ball, as is Digne. They both do everything really well, but Robertson gets the nod for his superior defensive ability and his overall consistency in a world class team. Digne has been tremendous in his debut season in English football, there’s no doubt about that. He truly has been excellent for Everton and he deserves to be recognised, on this season’s showings at least, as the second best left back in the country. Robertson, though, is simply head and shoulders above every other left back in England at the moment.
