Southampton have beaten Liverpool in the race to sign “highly-rated” teenager Ramello Mitchell from Birmingham, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the Saints have agreed a £300,000 fee to sign the 16-year-old, which could rise to £1million in the future, after impressing while on trial on the south coast.

It is understood that Liverpool have been tracking Mitchell, as well as Manchester United, Wolves and Leeds, after seeing him impress for Birmingham’s Under-16s and Under-18s.

OPINION

Southampton will no doubt be happy to have beaten Liverpool in the chase for Mitchell’s signature, but it remains to be seen if the Reds decide to raid the south coast club for him in the future if he manages to impress. Birmingham have produced some good young players in recent years. Demarai Gray, Jack Butland and Nathan Remond are among some of the current players who have risen through the ranks at St Andrews, and Mitchell will surely be wanting to follow in their footsteps. That £1million fee that Southampton have agreed for Mitchell could end up being an absolute bargain in the future, especially if the teenager gets the chance to one day break into the first team. Given the clubs that have been interested in him, you have to say that the future looks bright for this young forward and hopefully Liverpool won’t regret pushing harder to sign him.
