Liverpool are very close to agreeing personal terms with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, according to transfer expert Ian McGarry.

The Reds have long been linked with a move for the 24-cap Germany international, and McGarry believes that the finishing touches to a deal are close to being completed.

“This is a guy who since he signed from Stuttgart in 2016 has scored 60 goals in only 108 appearances – so he’s got a very good goals-to-games ratio,” he said, as per the Daily Express’ transfer centre [17/04: 09:25].

“My information is Liverpool are very close to agreeing personal terms with Werner. Obviously they have been lacking a natural number nine out-and-out striker for some time.”

OPINION

If this is true it’s absolutely phenomenal news for Liverpool. McGarry is right, the team have been lacking a true number nine in the conventional sense for a little while now. Roberto Firmino obviously excels as the central point of the team’s fluid front three, but he’s not a natural centre forward in the same way Werner is. The German is someone the team have been lacking, even amidst this incredible season. What a bonus it would be to have him up front sticking away all the chances that Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane would create for him. They could all still feature in a 4-2-3-1 formation, although you’d need two defensive-minded central midfielders in that system. Whether what McGarry says is accurate or not remains to be seen. You never know with these transfer experts. But all the noises are that the Reds are certainly interested in Werner, so even if a deal isn’t done yet there’s every chance that it could be completed in the future.
