Premier League legend Alan Shearer has included Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Shearer revealed the news on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday, after the 28-year-old Red produced a masterclass of a performance in his team’s 2-0 win over Cardiff City on Sunday.

The Dutch international roared back to form after a recent tough patch, crucially opening the scoring in the Welsh capital through a cleverly worked corner routine.

Wijnaldum has been joined in Shearer’s Team of the Week by the likes of Manchester City star Bernardo Silva, Watford winger Gerard Deulofeu and Crystal Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha.

OPINION

This is a completely well-deserved honour for Wijnaldum after what was terrific personal performance in the victory over Cardiff. There were eyebrows raised after the Dutchman got the nod in central midfield, particularly considering how poorly he played in mid week against Porto and in recent weeks in general. He’s been one of Liverpool’s best players this season, but there’s no doubt that his form has dipped of late. However, he reversed that trend with a phenomenal display against Neil Warnock’s side. He was everywhere in the Welsh capital, harrying the Cardiff players and providing an effective shield in front of the Reds backline. Then, when his moment to make an impact came, he ensured he took it with a rip-roaring strike that flew past Bluebirds goalkeeper Neil Etheridge. He should be very proud of the way he bounced back on Sunday, because he was truly excellent. Let’s hope he keeps it up in the weeks to come.
