Wright questions Sky coverage

Ian Wright has taken to Twitter to question why the Premier League trophy was at Anfield for Liverpool’s clash with Chelsea on Sunday.

The trophy was a central feature of Sky’s coverage of the match prior to kick-off, and was kept on a plinth by the side of the pitch during the build up to proceedings.

But Wright took exception to the decision with a cheeky social media post.

Writing on his personal Twitter, he said: “So Sky have got the Premier League trophy at Anfield! Why, do they win the league if they beat Chelsea?”

OPINION

This really doesn’t feel like something worth getting wound up about to be honest. Yes, the trophy was at Anfield, but on a day that represents such a potentially massive moment for the title race, is that such a bad thing? Certainly, if the scheduling had fallen the other way round and Manchester City had been the second game of the day, the trophy would have been on the touchline at the Etihad. You have to wonder what kind of point Wright is trying to make here. Is he implying that there is a bias in the coverage of this season’s title race? Because judging by the feature exclusively devoted to one of the most heartbreaking moments in Liverpool’s history, Steven Gerrard’s slip in 2014, that doesn’t seem overly likely. It seems as if everybody is always crying on about sports media having an agenda in favour of one team or another at any one time when the reality is, 99 times out of 100, the bias is only as prevalent as you make it out to be.
