Adrian Durham has had his say after it was reported that Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk was set to be awarded the PFA Player of the Year award.

Durham suggested that the award should be shared between both Virgil Van Dijk and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling until the end of the season after the Daily Mail reported the Reds defender had won the accolade, and whoever wins the league gets to keep it.

“I honestly think that they should give it to them jointly, and then whoever wins the title actually takes it for good.” said Durham (talkSPORT Wednesday April 24th, 18:07)

Darren Gough then pointed a problem in Durham’s suggestion by saying what if Liverpool win the Champions League.

“What about if the other one wins the Champions League? There’s your problem straight away.” said Darren Gough.

Durham then responded: “This is the Premier League season, I think over the course of the 38 game season it should be decided.”

OPINION

Both Van Dijk and Sterling have had unbelievable seasons, and both have contributed heavily to their respective teams being in a heated competition for the Premier League title. However, it was Van Dijk who has reportedly been awarded with the PFA Player of the Year award. Although the award would be completely justified, arguably Sterling deserved it just as much, if not more, which sparks the debate of the two possibly sharing the award. The main issue with this however, as Gough said, would be that if one player were to win the Premier League, and the other win the Champions League, surely the accolade would be even more of a tough decision to make come the end of the season. Some would also argue that the award should be based solely on the performance of the players in the Premier League, in which case whichever player was part of a Premier League winning squad come the end of the season should be awarded as PFA Player of the Year.
