Alexander-Arnold can tear Alonso apart

OPINION

There seems to be a general consensus amongst Chelsea fans that Marcos Alonso isn’t very good at football.

The Spanish full-back was fine when playing in a back five under Antonio Conte, acting as a left wing-back, but this season, now that Maurizio Sarri has switched to a back four, he has been found wanting on several occasions..

In an attacking sense he is passable enough, still providing a decent crossing option and the occasional goal, but his defensive work, the priority of any defender, is far beneath the standard you would expect from a player playing at the level that he does.

That, to be frank, makes him a target, and one that Liverpool can really exploit on Sunday at Anfield.

The Reds know that nothing but a win will do as they push for a first league title in 29 years, and you get the distinct impression that an early goal would be the best way to settle the nerves that are bound to be jangling before kick off.

The most obvious weak link in Chelsea’s team is Alonso, and Jurgen Klopp should, therefore, do all he can to get at him.

That means unleashing Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The England international is already one of the finest attacking full-backs in the Premier League, and alongside Andy Robertson, makes for a proposition on the front foot.

The £50,000-a-week youngster [Spotrac] needs no invitation to get forward, but if Klopp is cunning, he will focus his side’s attentions down the right side of their attack, and give Alexander-Arnold licence to cause carnage.
