Roberto Firmino has sometimes been the forgotten man at Liverpool this season. With Sadio Mane hitting new heights in his goalscoring exploits and Mo Salah coming under fairly heavy scrutiny for his failure to emulate last season’s scintillating form, the Brazilian has spent a fair amount of time in the shadows this campaign, but that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t been a valuable player for the Reds. His willingness to drop deep and link the play, plus his tireless pressing from the front means that he is far from your conventional centre forward, but the role he plays for Jurgen Klopp’s men is absolutely vital to the success of their system. He showed this again on Tuesday night against FC Porto, when he found the back of the net, but perhaps more importantly, facilitated this around him with a hard working and selfless performance. His efforts were rewarded with the Champions League player of the week award, as announced via the club’s official Twitter, and you have to say that it was fully deserved. This understated kind of performance is fast becoming a hallmark of the Brazilian’s game, and if he can keep up the brilliant form he is currently in, it could go a long way towards helping his side to glory come the end May. However for now he should bask in the admiration of some Liverpool fans who heaped lots of praise of Firmino following this official update.
