OPINION
It’s mad that in this day and age people still need to be reminded that there is no place for racism in football, or in society as a whole. After a series of high profile incidents involving Raheem Sterling and the England national team over the course of this season, those abhorrent views purported by a mindless minority reared their ugly head again on Tuesday night when Juventus teenager Moise Kean was subjected to abuse by Cagliari fans in his side’s 2-0 Serie A win. The debate was then exacerbated when teammate Leonardo Bonucci spoke out after the match suggesting that the youngster was partially to blame for the vile chanting, as reported by the BBC. This led to an outpouring of support for Kean, with Sterling referring to Bonucci’s comments as “laughable”. Daniel Sturridge also took to social media to express his support for his Italian counterpart, and Liverpool fans were vocal in their appreciation of his sentiment. For young, black men to still have to endure this kind of horrendous behaviour towards them when they are doing nothing more than their job is simply unacceptable, and you would hope that the more players like Sturridge and Sterling who speak out about it, the clearer that should become for the ignorant few who still don’t seem to understand that regardless of skin colour, religious belief, or anything else, we are all equal.
