There’s no doubt that Liverpool left back Andrew Robertson has been one of the team’s best and most consistent performers this season.

It was a surprise, then, to see him produce such a below par performance against Porto on Wednesday night. The Scotland international wasn’t awful in the Reds’ 4-1 win in Portugal, but it certainly wasn’t his finest display.

The problem that the former Hull City man has is that we now expect excellence every single game from him. He has been so good over the past 18 months that he is now considered arguably the best left back in world football – with that comes expectation.

However, he needs to take a look in the mirror after what he produced on Wednesday. This was a showing that was undoubtedly far below his usual high standards.

The 25-year-old struggled early on to cope with the threat of Porto winger Jesus Corona. The Portuguese giants started strongly and Corona, in particular, looked dangerous. Robertson didn’t quite seem to know what to do with him, but Sadio Mane’s first half strike curtailed the Mexican’s influence.

It wasn’t just that for Robertson, though. Usually so dynamic going forward, he failed to have any impact from an offensive point of view. The entire Liverpool team were a bit flat for large portions of the contest, to be fair, but you expect more from the Scotsman at this point.

Jurgen Klopp is certainly going to need him to do much better against Barcelona in the Champions League semi final. One bad performance doesn’t erase a season’s worth of excellent ones, it only makes it more surprising when it occurs.
