The Daily Mail have reported that Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has been awarded with the PFA Player of the Year award beating the likes of Raheem Sterling of Manchester City.

There is absolutely no doubting the 27-year old’s ability, and he has been an absolute revelation for Liverpool this season, arguably being one of the main reasons that the Reds are where they are in the league, at this stage of the season.

However, there have been a number of other recent defensive additions to the Reds’ squad which have aided Van Dijk to obtaining this prestigious accolade, that is expected to be heading his way.

Joel Matip and Andy Robertson are two names which have also been outstanding for the majority of this years Premier League campaign, along with Alisson who has been surreal between the sticks.

Arguably, without these players, Van Dijk may not have edged the victory in the race to be names the best Premier League player of the season.

Matip especially is often overlooked, and his partnership with the Holland international has been an entertaining one all season, with Matip making attacking runs forward as Van Dijk cleans up defensively.

Of course, if a player is playing his football in a better team, they are going to look better, that’s a given.

However, when Van Dijk was playing for Southampton, he never quite looked like the finished product, although he definitely does now under the management of Jurgen Klopp.

Van Dijk is now considered by many as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, if not the world, and although this is completely deserved, the help from his Liverpool teammates has definitely been a key factor in his rise to greatness.
