Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on Liverpool midfielder Fabinho, calling him a “godsend”.

The Brazilian has enjoyed a fine debut season in England, and his efforts have not escaped the attention of the former Manchester United ace.

Ferdinand took to Twitter to share a video of him analysing the 25-year-old with the caption: “Fabinho is a defender’s dream.

“Klopp has got him dominating the centre of the park! What a player!”

In the video, he goes on to say: “This man has been for me the standout in this midfield this season. What a find.

“For a defender to have a midfielder who identifies dangerous situations and snuffs it out is a godsend.”

OPINION

These are big words from Ferdinand, but ones that are entirely justified. Fabinho got off to a shaky start in England, but ever since he established himself as a mainstay in the side, he has been a revelation. The way he shields his defence not only helps to break down opposition attacks, but also helps those in front of him to play with greater freedom and expression to. He is an intelligent, tireless reader of the game, and he has helped bring this Liverpool side on leaps and bounds. People will talk about the influence of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker as signings, but Fabinho should be held in the highest regard as well. Every world class team needs somebody to do the dirty work in the engine room, and he is very much that man for the Reds. He is surely nailed on to start on Saturday evening, and if he does, you can expect him to make life miserable for anybody who gets within a five metre radius of him.
