Ex-Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has claimed that Liverpool attacker Ryan Kent will be top of Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox ‘wanted list’ this summer.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a superb season on loan with Gerrard’s team, and Ferguson believes that the Liverpool legend will be hugely keen to bring him in again in a few months time.

“I think that’s a key signing, I’ve got to be honest with you,” he told PLZ Soccer [08:09]. “I think he’ll be at the top of Steven Gerrard’s wanted list. Whether that’s on a permanent deal or – obviously Steven Gerrard is going to have a good relationship with Liverpool – whether that’s back for another year on loan.

“When he went out on loan previously he struggled, but I’ve been really impressed with him. He can win games – [I] really like him as a player. He’s the right sort of character, as well. I’m hopeful that Rangers can get him back. Whether it’s a loan or permanent I’m not really bothered, as long as he’s playing in a Rangers jersey next season.”

OPINION

It’s no surprise that former Rangers players are banging the drum for Kent to be brought back to Ibrox next season. He has been absolutely unbelievable for the Glasgow giants and has truly come on leaps and bounds in Rangers blue. Gerrard obviously has a great relationship with the player and has unlocked his true potential, so it would be no bad thing for him to return to the club next season. However, the chances of that happening are entirely dependent on Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp will have kept a close eye on Kent and will no doubt be hugely impressed with his progress. However, whether he’s done enough for the Reds boss to think that he has a real future at Anfield remains to be seen. The competition for places at Liverpool is so ridiculously fierce that Kent will probably never be a regular player for them. That’s unfortunate for him, but it’s likely that he’ll go on to have a fine career at Rangers, probably, if it’s decreed that he’s not good enough to make the grade at Anfield.
