Chelsea Women’s manager Emma Hayes has suggested that Liverpool will be haunted by losing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City.

The Reds held a commanding lead over the Blues earlier in the season, with the gap standing at 10 points at one point, albeit with City holding a game in hand.

But Hayes believes that Jurgen Klopp’s men will have a lot of regret about letting that lead slip.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate, as quoted in the Daily Star, she said: “There’s one thing I sensed around that time, that they got so excited about winning the title, they perhaps didn’t keep applying the very things that were getting them from game to game, but it’s easy to criticize that.

“When you’re in that position and you start to see that, not being able to close that out, will haunt them.”

OPINION

Retrospectively, it is easy to pick apart the exact slip-ups that may or may not have cost Liverpool the title this season. The loss against Man City, the only game they lost all season, and the two 1-1 draws against West Ham and Leicester City around the turn of the year all come to mind, but the fact of the matter is that they were bested by a ridiculously strong side. To get 97 points and to win the title is almost unbelievable, and speaks testament as to how good this City side are. The truth is that Liverpool couldn’t have done much more in their hunt for the crown, and picking out individual incidents doesn’t do any good now. Make no mistake, this was a title decided by the finest of margins, and it could so easily have swung the other way. Ultimately, however, it didn’t, and now Liverpool must get their heads down and focus on the task at hand – rebuilding for next season and winning he Champions League in June.
