Hertha Berlin manager Michael Preetz has confirmed that his side are keen to re-sign Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic on loan next season.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a stellar campaign in the Bundesliga, hitting five goals from midfield, and Preetz has been very clear on how much he would like to retain the Serbian’s services next term.

As quoted in the Echo (12.36), he said: “I’ll keep the ball rolling and our goal is to extend the loan by one year.

“We have a permanent exchange with Liverpool FC and have had some personal talks with Jurgen Klopp over the past week with Marko.

“I can not promise anything – only that I will try everything that the boy plays next year in Berlin.”

OPINION

The fact that Preetz is so adamant to keep hold of Grujic should tell you everything you need to know about how well the Serbian has done in the Bundesliga this year. He has been a standout performer for Hertha during this campaign, and has firmly endeared himself to fans and staff alike with his displays. From a Liverpool perspective, this could prove to be a really decent thing. Even performing at the level that he is, is Grujic likely to break into the first team next season? Probably not. Why not let him have another year out at a club that he clearly loves? That way, he will grow some more, develop a little, and come back an even better player than he is right now. From that point onwards it’s a win win. Keep him and reap the rewards, or sell him on at a massively jacked up price. Liverpool should not hesitate to let Grujic go.
