Like it or loathe it, English football is now a two horse race.

You can talk about the top six as much as you want, and you can hype up the race for Champions League football until the cows come home, but honestly, it’s hard to see how anybody can break the Manchester City Liverpool duopoly that has sprung up over the past season.

Tottenham are perhaps the closest side to doing so, especially given their new stadium and the status that affords them, but even then, they are some way off the top two, and it could be years before they are ready to properly compete for a title.

A two horse race it is then, and that raises another pressing question – do Liverpool have what it takes to usurp City?

On the one hand, they pushed the champions extremely close this season, and you would fancy them to get stronger and stronger as time passes.

On the other, you have to wonder what else the Reds could conceivably do to challenge a side who themselves will continue to improve and grow.

Whatever happens, this could prove to be a period of titanic battles between two clubs capable of building dynasties, but in the long term, Liverpool might just have the edge.

City are a team on the cusp of transition.

Vincent Kompany has announced he is leaving, David Silva and Fernandinho can’t have too long left at the very top, and even Sergio Aguero is now 30.

Simply put, there is a large section of Pep Guardiola’s squad that will need replacing in the relatively near future, and finding talents able to take up the mantle of a group of players as imperious and accomplished as City’s current crop will be no easy task.

By contrast, Liverpool have a young squad predominantly tied down to long term contracts.

If and when City begin to rebuild, surely the time will be right for the Reds to make their move.

The process has arguably already begun.
