Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo is poised to sign a contract extension with the Reds, before heading on loan to Rangers, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claims that the 21-year-old is highly rated by those at Anfield and will be tied down to a five-year extension, before being allowed to link up with Reds legend Steven Gerrard in Glasgow.

The Ibrox outfit brought Ovie Ejaria and Ryan Kent to Scotland on loan last summer, with the duo enjoying contrasting fortunes north of the border.

Ojo spend this campaign on loan at French side Reims, but mostly appeared as a substitute and failed to make a substantial impact across the Channel.

OPINION

This is a bit of a strange one, the contract extension at least. Has Ojo really done enough in his various loan spells away from Anfield – particularly with Reims – to merit a new deal? The answer would appear to be no. However, there must be a reason why he’s so highly rated by the Reds. They clearly see him as a player with potential, but you wonder whether this is an extension granted for cynical reasons by Liverpool. They might be looking to tie him down on a long term deal so that they can sell him on for a larger profit next summer if he impresses at Rangers in the way that Kent did. Gerrard is clearly capable of getting the best out of his players, so it’s highly possible that Ojo will make great strides at Ibrox. If that’s the case then he could be moved on permanently next year for a bigger fee than were he to depart this summer. That may well be the club’s thinking, because otherwise this extension doesn’t quite make sense.
