Sky Sports pundit Danny Mills has suggested that Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is likely to be leaving Anfield during the summer transfer window.

Lallana has seen his first team involvement limited in recent seasons after a frustrating spell with injury troubles, with the 31-year-old making just 16 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, after recovering from an injury hit 2017/18 campaign.

Mills has revealed that he thinks Lallana might be wanting to leave Anfield this summer to secure more regular game time, and that he believes the England international will not be short of suitors should he decide to depart Anfield.

“You almost forget about him but he is very gifted and a talented footballer. I would almost say he more fits the Man City style, he’d be perfect for them with his short, darting runs and clever runs in behind,” Mills told Football Insider.

“As you start to get older, you realise you are not invincible and your career is not going to go on forever. Liverpool will definitely want to keep him but it might come down to him wanting to reignite his career.”

“If that’s the case, he’s going to go. He’s such a good player he won’t be short of interested clubs.”

OPINION

Mills is probably right to highlight that Lallana could well be wanting to leave Liverpool this summer in order to get some more regular game time. The England international has been used sparingly by Klopp throughout the season, making only six starts, which will not be enough for a player who could be getting regular starts elsewhere in the Premier League. Lallana has been an excellent servant at Anfield, making 156 appearances since joining Liverpool from Southampton for 25million in the summer of 2014. However, after an injury plagued campaign last season, he has now fallen behind the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keïta, James Milner and Fabinho in Liverpool’s midfield pecking order. As Mills acknowledges Lallana is a very gifted player, who would be able to add some extra quality to a host of other sides, but the former defender’s revelation that he might be better suited to Manchester City’s style of play is an interesting one to hear for Reds supporters. Whatever happens with the 31-year-old’s future this summer he will be fondly remembered at Anfield for some of the excellent performance he has produced in a Liverpool shirt.
