Rangers are in talks to sign Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo on loan this summer, with Steven Gerrard turning his attentions to the Reds’ youth system to strengthen his squad, according to Football Insider.

The reliable outlet report that Rangers are hoping to reach a similar loan agreement for Ojo, 21, from Liverpool, as the Scottish club did with moves for Ryan Kent and Ovie Ejaria in last summer’s transfer window.

Gerrard is thought to be heading the discussions with Liverpool for the winger, having worked with Ojo during his spell as the manager of the Reds’ Under-18s before he made the move to become Rangers manager last summer.

It is believed that Gerrard plans to use Ojo on the right-hand side of the pitch, allowing the 21-year-old to cut inside on his preferred right foot, in a similar way to what Mohamed Salah does at Liverpool, with the former Reds midfielder looking to help the winger fulfill his potential in Scotland, like Kent has managed to do this season.

OPINION

Next season will be a vital one for the development of Ojo’s career, with the 21-year-old already having enjoyed two productive loan spells with Wolves and Fulham in his fledgling career. However, Ojo has failed to make a similar positive impression during a loan spell with French club Reims this campaign, registering just one goal in 19 games for the French side. The attacker is unlikely to be Jurgen Klopp’s first team plans for next season, meaning that another loan move away from Anfield could be the best option for Ojo’s development. Rangers could prove to be a very good move for the 21-year-old, with Kent already having an impressive season at Ibrox under Gerrard’s coaching this season. Ojo will be hopeful that the former Liverpool midfielder could have the same impact on his development next term if he joins Rangers this summer. If the winger does go out on loan and demonstrate his talent he could force his way into Klopp’s thoughts for the following campaign.
