Rangers goalkeeper Andy Firth attended Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona on Tuesday, as the Reds produced a stunning comeback to reach the Champions League final.

The 22-year-old joined Rangers from National League side Barrow in the January transfer window, as reported by Rangers’ official club website, but has yet to feature for Steven Gerrard’s side since he made the move to Ibrox.

Firth started his career at Liverpool in their academy, working with Gerrard when the former Reds midfielder was a youth coach at the club, before leaving to join Barrow on a free transfer in 2018, but he was back at Anfield on Tuesday to witness Jurgen Klopp’s side produce an historic comeback win against Barcelona.

“We’re going to Madrid” said Firth via his Instagram story.

OPINION

Firth has been something of a forgotten figure at Rangers since he made the switch to Ibrox in January, but Gerrard’s faith in the goalkeeper was evidenced by him deciding to add him to his squad in the winter window. Gerrard has worked with the 22-year-old whilst a youth coach at Liverpool, and will therefore be aware of his qualities which might suggest that he maybe be able to make more of an impact at Ibrox next season. The fact that he attended Liverpool’s semi-final against Barcelona highlights the fondness he still holds for the club whose youth academy he graduated from before making a permanent move to Barrow. Firth will hope he can stage a similar comeback to Liverpool’s next season when he looks to be given more game time at Rangers by Gerrard in the SPFL next season. The Reds win against Barcelona saw them qualify for the Champions League final and Firth will be cheering on his former club once again when they face either Ajax or Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
