Alan Shearer was full of admiration for the atmosphere at Anfield throughout Liverpool’s dramatic 4-0 win against Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals.

The scarcely believable win secured Liverpool a remarkable comeback, with Jurgen Klopp’s side losing the first leg 3-0 in Spain, assuring a place in the Champions League final for the second successive season.

After the game Shearer could not contain his amazement over the atmosphere among the fans inside Anfield, with even some Barcelona supporters clapping Liverpool’s players at the final whistle, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday (10:07pm) the Englishman said: “For me to be here to sample this atmosphere and I can’t remember, and I don’t think I’ll ever see an atmosphere like this again.”

“As I said I’ve been to Anfield many times, and I’ve had some good and bad days here, but tonight it was just something that took my breath away, unbelievable.”

OPINION

Shearer is a man who, as he said, has seen an awful lot at Anfield throughout his career. The former England international won the title with Blackburn Rovers at Anfield, despite losing, on the final day of the season in 1995. He also saw his Newcastle side, when he was in charge as caretaker manager, lose an important game at the stadium on their way to relegation in the 2008/09 season. Therefore, for him to describe the atmosphere within the stadium as something which he has never seen before, perfectly captures the historic and remarkable performance Liverpool produced to overturn the tie against all the odds. Klopp’s side had to turn around a 3-0 deficit from the first leg, without both Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, and yet despite that the Reds, with the help of a the crowd, managed to reach yet another Champions League final. It was as Shearer summed up simply unbelievable and a night that those inside Anfield to witness it will never forget.
