OPINION

Former Liverpool man John Barnes believes that in order to win the Premier League next season the Reds need other clubs to fail.

The Reds fell just short of the title this season at the hands of Manchester City, and will be looking to improve next season and finish top of the Premier League.

The ex-Liverpool man has had a few words to say on the matter however, and believes that the Reds may need other clubs to fail next season in order to succeed int the league.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Barnes said: “Chances are, we’re going to get less than 97 points next season,

“If we get 90 points next season and win the league, yes, we’ve won a trophy so we can say that we’re more successful than  this season, but in my opinion we’re more successful this season because we’ve won more games.

“What we’re hoping if we get 85 points and win the league, is for other teams to fail.”

Arguably, Barnes has a point and it may take some good fortune next season for Liverpool to have a direct shot at the Premier League title.

Manchester City are obviously the main competition for the Reds, and it may take them failing for Jurgen Klopp’s men in order to bring the title to Anfield come the end of next season.

Liverpool have only lost one single game this season, and it seems remarkable that this hasn’t lead them to Premier League glory this season.

This means that even if they do the same next season, they may have to rely on their main competitors having a worse season than this year.

Pep Guardiola’s City will no doubt be looking to retain the Premier League title again next season for the second time in a row, and it may end up taking another sublime season from Klopp’s Liverpool to beat the Manchester side to the title.

Barnes’ comment on the Reds may be right, but only time will tell next season and Liverpool have bigger things to worry about with their Champions League final right around the corner.
