OPINION
Liverpool centre back Dejan Lovren produced a typically worrisome performance in his side’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday. The Croatian international never looked comfortable as the hosts tested the Reds throughout at St James’ Park. It was a hard evening’s work for Jurgen Klopp’s team in general, and Lovren’s dodgy display at the back didn’t help matters at all. It was his poor back pass which put the Magpies’ first goal in motion, while he was given an absolutely torrid time by Salomon Rondon in the Newcastle attack. The 29-year-old is no longer a regular starter for Liverpool and you could see why on Saturday. When you compare his performance here to those of Joe Gomez in the first half of the season or Joel Matip in the second, you can see why the Reds faithful feel more comfortable when one of those two men partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the defence. A nervy summer surely awaits the former Southampton man after this disasterclass.

Another good win from @LFC, thanks to Origi for the late winner. Hope Salah injury is not that serious though. Anyway Lovren and Sturridge were both awful yesterday. #NEWLIV

He seems like a genuinely nice bloke but I honestly struggle to see what Lovren brings to the side?
He can’t defend, decision making is awful and his errors always seem to cost us goals. He is literally 5th choice at best. VVD, Matip, Gomez, Fabinho then Lovren. #lfc— YNWA (@KarlCYNWA) May 5, 2019
Reckon Lovren has kicked his last ball for LFC. Thoughts?

#LFC @LFC It’s utter madness and he has been doing it for the last month or so!! Not only is Matip in outstanding form, and Lovren with the ability of no more than a last resort desperation backup player but it can’t be good for VVD because he has to keep adjusting????? Crazy!!

What a resilient team Klopp has built at Liverpool. They might end up empty handed but this has been some season watching @LFC
On the downside Lovren was scandalous. Clearances not traveling 5 metres, second ball pressure all the time. Also the demise of Sturridge is sad to see.
