Liverpool making right call with Sessegnon

Left back will almost certainly be an area of need for Liverpool this summer, with current back up Alberto Moreno set to leave when his contract expires.

However, it doesn’t appear as if Fulham wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon will be the man to fill the breach. The Daily Express reported on Saturday that Jurgen Klopp’s side had previously shown an interest in the versatile 18-year-old, but that that has since cooled, despite him being a Reds supporter.

Previously the opinion has been that the Englishman would be exactly what Liverpool need. However, with the Express’s report stating that the Cottagers value him at £40million, he’s simply not worth the trouble for Klopp’s team.

That’s clearly how sporting director Michael Edwards and co. feel as well, and they’re absolutely spot on. No matter if the Reds were planning to utilise Sessegnon at left back or in attack, either way he wouldn’t be first choice – and £40million for a back up is simply too much money.

Let’s continue for now on the assumption that he would hypothetically be purchased as a left back. Well, there’s no way he’s going to regularly be starting over arguably the finest left back in world football Andrew Robertson, is there?

If he were to be purchased as a winger/attacker, instead, can you picture him starting ahead of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane? No, me neither.

With that said, £40million is just too much for a reserve option, especially when you consider that it’s highly unlikely that Liverpool will be repeating their huge spending of a year ago.

No, Edwards and the rest of the Reds’ hierarchy are 100% right to walk away from a Sessegnon deal on these terms. He’s a fantastic prospect, but Liverpool simply don’t need him at the moment.
