Ally McCoist heaped praise on Liverpool for signing goalkeeper Alisson Becker and Virgil Van Dijk in 2018 as he claimed the duo had made quite an unbelievable difference to the side.

The Reds signed Alisson from AS Roma in July 2018 for £67million (Source: Sky Sports), while Van Dijk arrived at Anfield from Southampton in January 2018 after Jurgen Klopp’s side agreed a £75million deal for him (Source: BBC).

Despite Liverpool splashing a serious amount of cash on both, McCoist shared that he still found the impact they have been able to make on the Reds incredible as he never predicted it.

“The goalkeeper made a howler in the Champions League final against Real Madrid and they replace him with Alisson,” said McCoist on talkSPORT (8:13am, Wednesday, June 26th).

“And what they do is they wait, wait and wait, they couldn’t get Van Dijk but they knew exactly who they wanted, couldn’t get him at the specific time they wanted him but they waited and finally they got their man.

“And the difference is incredible that those two players have made.

“The difference they have made at Liverpool has been quite unbelievable, I couldn’t have summarised the difference to the side and Klopp and Liverpool deserve enormous, enormous credit for that.

“Obviously these two signings obviously bring their own talent, but in particular Van Dijk, he has united that defence and team in general.”

OPINION

You have to respect McCoist holding his hands up and openly admitting that he didn’t think Alisson and Van Dijk would transform the Reds in the way that they did, as many pundits are probably likely claiming they all saw it come. Both Reds players had an incredible 2018/19 campaign and helped Klopp’s side lift the Champions League trophy. Alisson featured 51 times across all competitions in his latest campaign, racking up impressive 27 clean sheets in the process. The Brazilian particularly impressed in his 38 league outings as he made 76 saves and registered 21 clean sheets to see him win the Golden Glove award (Source: Premier League). Van Dijk was also so good that he ended up among the awards as well. The 27-year-old centre-back won Premier League player of the season after helping his side win 30 of their 38 league games. The centre-back won 74% of the 38 tackles he made in the league, and racked up 20 clean sheets.
