Tony Cascarino didn’t seem to think Liverpool should sign Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen if the opportunity came about.

The Mirror reported on Saturday that the 27-year-old Spurs playmaker was eyeing a switch to Manchester United or Juventus as his dream move to Real Madrid had the collapsed.

The newspaper claimed that Spurs were keen to let Eriksen leave and that Daniel Levy had slapped a £100million price tag on the playmaker’s head.

Georgie Bingham spoke about Manchester United wanting Eriksen before asking Cascarino whether the Reds should be linked to the Spurs midfielder, and this prompted the pundit to share he had his doubts whether the 27-year-old would excel at Anfield.

“Eriksen’s season has been indifferent, he has been okay but he hasn’t been as good as he has in years gone by,” said Cascarino on talkSPORT (8:09am, Sunday June 23rd).

“He’s a fabulously talented footballer, but he doesn’t quite have the pace of the way Liverpool play, I think that’s a fair point.

“Liverpool play at a high intensity, rapid players in their team, Eriksen is more of a cultured footballer who finds a pass, and look at Man United he’d have pace in front of him with Marcus Rashford, Martial, just to name a few.

“So I don’t think Liverpool would be a fit for him.”

OPINION

Cascarino seems to think Eriksen isn’t suited to Liverpool’s playing style, so seems against a move before he even takes into account the player’s eye-watering price tag. It’s easy to see why the pundit has his doubts about Eriksen at Anfield, as he isn’t the paciest of players and Jurgen Klopp’s side do tend to play a fast, free-flowing style of football, but he would be a useful signing. Eriksen scored 10 goals and assisted 17 in his 51 outings in the 2018/19 campaign, which Cascarino believes was only an okay season, and knows the Premier League like the back of his hand. The 27-year-old has played 209 times in England’s top-flight so would be able to settle in quickly at the Reds and hit the ground running. Eriksen has proven in the Premier League his knack for creating goals, he has registered 60 assists during his outings and has created 70 big chances (Source: Premier League) and surely having a player capable of carving out opportunities is always worth having. Also given that Adam Lallana is now 31-years-old and has a worrying injury record, surely signing Eriksen would see the Reds able to get rid of the attacking midfielder if they signed the Dane.
