Samuel Eto’o has urged Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah to join Barcelona.

The 27-year-old, who has scored 71 goals in 104 appearances since joining from Roma in June 2017, has been linked with a move to fellow La Liga giants Real Madrid this summer [Phillipe Carayon, Canal+].

Speaking to BBC Sport, however, former Chelsea striker Eto’o said that a move to the Camp Nou would be a “better fit” for the Egyptian.

“Barcelona would be a better fit,” the 38-year-old said. “Real gave me the opportunity to leave Africa but I know Barcelona’s style and I think it would be better for him.

“If he has the chance to play in the best league of the world, which is the Spanish one, he has to sign for Barcelona. Mo has everything to be one of the best players in the world.”

OPINION

There is absolutely zero chance of Salah leaving Liverpool this summer, but if he continues to blossom and pick up lots of silverware in the next couple of seasons, he could seek a new challenge. It’s a long shot to suggest that just yet, because Salah is the talisman at Anfield and is already a Reds legend. He is loving life on Merseyside and no-one would have any thoughts at this moment about him leaving. But a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid would be the ideal next move for Salah. He wanted to come back to the Premier League to prove himself and, despite not picking up a winners’ medal, two Golden Boot awards and a league-high goalscoring record for one season go some way to doing that. For now, there is no chance whatsoever that Salah leaves. But it is an interesting proposition. If this Liverpool team continues to pick up silverware, Salah could maybe seek a new challenge and, as Eto’o says, Barcelona would be a great place to go.
