Evening Standard journalist David Lynch has mooted the possibility of there being uncertainty around Georginio Wijnaldum’s future at Liverpool.

The 28-year-old has another two years remaining on his contract and while it is understood that Joel Matip, James Milner and Divock Origi will be offered new terms as they enter the last 12 months of their deals, it remains to be seen what will happen to the Dutch midfielder.

Lynch does expect Wijnaldum to eventually earn a new deal at Anfield but has suggested that there is some lack of clarity over the midfielder’s long-term future.

“Three players who are relatively close to the end of their deals, Joel Matip, James Milner and Divock Origi, will all be offered fresh terms by the club after playing a key role in Champions League victory,” Lynch told Anfield HQ.

He added: “That would leave Georginio Wijnaldum as the only regular starter with any degree of uncertainty around his future but surely he will be tied down soon enough.”

OPINION

Wijnaldum was one of the most important players for Jurgen Klopp last season as Liverpool finished runners-up in the Premier League and won the Champions League title. The former Newcastle player made 47 appearances in all competitions for the European champions, scoring five goals in the process. His tireless work in the midfield was crucial for the Reds and to lose him would leave a gaping hole in the middle of Klopp’s formation. While there is no need to panic right now about Wijnaldum’s future, if he does not get a new contract in the 12 months, then there have to be questions marks asked about whether or not he’ll be kept on. Wijnaldum will turn 30 towards the end of 2020, so next summer could be Liverpool’s last chance to make some decent money off the Dutchman. Maybe a one-year contract extension would be the best cause of action at this time, just to cancel out any doubts that may exist.
