Klopp and Edwards in daily contact

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is in daily contact with Reds sporting director Michael Edwards this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that the German is regularly in touch with the Anfield head-honcho, who is the key figure in the club’s recruitment and player identification processes.

However, it is thought that Edwards never truly saw eye to eye with Klopp’s predecessor as Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who is now in charge at Leicester City.

Edwards’s reputation amongst the Reds supporters is almost as exalted as Klopp’s having negotiated a number of tremendous deals during his time as the club’s sporting director.

OPINION

It’s no surprise that a club as successful as Liverpool, who have made such phenomenal strides forward in recent years, has at its foundation a rock-solid relationship between arguably the two most important men at the club. Certainly in terms of the business on the pitch, Klopp and Edwards are the duo most vital to the continued success of the Reds. Edwards identifies potential signings, presents them to Klopp, gets the manager’s feedback and then proceeds or decides against pursuing transfer targets. Klopp, in turn, works his magic on the training ground and in the dressing room. The combined efforts of both men, as well as myriad other members of staff and the players, saw Liverpool secure their sixth European Cup earlier this month. So it’s no surprise that the two men are in daily contact. However what is surprising, given what Edwards has achieved on Merseyside, is that he had such a strained relationship with former boss Rodgers.
