Liverpool are digging their heels in over a potential raid for Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes as the player’s agent jets in to seal his client a move, according to Correio da Manhã.

The Portuguese publication claim that Fernandes’ agent Miguel Pinho has flown to England to hear what Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Manchester United and Tottenham have to offer, the Reds said to have already tabled a £40million bid for the 24-year-old.

It is stated that Jurgen Klopp’s side are not willing to budge on their valuation of the 12-cap Portgual international, who scored 32 goals across all competitions last season, leaving United and Spurs the chance to trump the Premier League runners up to a move.

Opinion

If Liverpool really want Fernandes to join this summer, they need to make that clear to the player and his agent before another side steal a march on them. His record during the 2018/19 season was exceptional, scoring 32 goals and chipping in with a further 18 assists across all competitions, so it is no wonder why so many top clubs are keen on his capture. A fee of £40million might be a lot to most clubs but for the likes of Liverpool, it is the sort of price they would expect to pay for someone who is going to come in and play as a regular in the side. Is Fernandes going to fit in at Anfield? As an attacking midfielder, he could bring some cutting edge to the side but it would be at the cost of someone like Georginio Wijnaldum – and is Jurgen Klopp really going to axe the Dutchman after his impressive season? These are the questions that Liverpool will be asking themselves as they weigh up a deal for the Portuguese ace – but if someone offers more money then they might not have to worry about how and where he slots in.
