Liverpool have seen a £40million bid rejected for Sporting Lisbon playmaker Bruno Fernandes, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claims that Jurgen Klopp’s team are in the hunt for the 24-year-old, and went so far as to make an official bid for him, but saw it batted away by Marcel Keizer’s side.

However, the Reds’ fierce rivals Manchester United are now thought to have moved into pole position for the Portugal international, while Tottenham Hotspur are also interested.

Fernandes scored 32 goals and provided 18 assists from attacking midfield in a stunning season for his club.

This is a shame, because Fernandes’s statistics this campaign speak for themselves. If you compare him to arguably the Reds’ two most creative midfielders this term, Xherdan Shaqiri and Georginio Wijnaldum, he comes off very favourably indeed. It’s worth remembering that Shaqiri played a lot less football than the two other men, but still, Fernandes wipes the floor with both of the Liverpool stars. Clearly he would be a terrific addition, providing the creativity and goal threat from midfield that Klopp’s team lacked at times this season. However, it appears that United are now the most likely party to bring the Portuguese phenom to England. That’s a shame, but their need is far greater than Liverpool’s so it’s much more probable that they will be able to spend big money on the player.
