Liverpool not in for Firpo

Liverpool are not interested in signing Real Betis left back Junior Firpo this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that reports that the Reds are poised to make the 22-year-old their first signing of the summer are wide of the mark.

Indeed, it is thought that the player hasn’t been discussed by either Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp or sporting director Michael Edwards.

Spanish publication Marca reported on Sunday that Klopp’s team are rivalling Manchester United for the left back, who has a release clause of £44.7million.

OPINION

Firpo always seemed to be a bit of a far-fetched transfer target for Liverpool this summer. The Reds are, by all accounts, unwilling to splash the cash in the manner that they did last summer. And so Firpo, at almost £45million, was always an unlikely recruit for Klopp’s team. That sort of money for a back up left back is just ridiculous. Firpo is a fine player, and certainly an extremely good prospect at just 22 years of age. However, make no mistake about it, he’d be playing second fiddle to Andrew Robertson at Anfield. No matter which left back Liverpool signed, they’d be second choice to the Scotland captain. That’s what happens when you play the same position as someone who is the best in the world at their particular role. So as far as Klopp and Edwards are concerned, it appears, United are welcome to Firpo. It’s surely far more likely that Liverpool will end up signing a low-cost option to back Robertson up next season.
