Sporting director Michael Edwards will not stand in the way of Simon Mignolet if he wants to quit Liverpool this summer, according to the London Evening Standard.

The newspaper claims that the Reds are ready to cash in on the 31-year-old and Jurgen Klopp is in the hunt to sign a replacement back-up goalkeeper.

Mignolet played just two times across all competitions for Liverpool last term and it is understood that Southampton shot-stopper Alex McCarthy is viewed as a potential replacement for the £60,000-a-week [Spotrac] Belgian.

OPINION

Mignolet will have found things quite tough in the last couple of seasons. He has seen himself lose the number one spot at Anfield, suffer from poor form due to his inconsistent playing time and watched on from the sidelines as Loris Karius’ blunders cost the Reds the Champions League title in 2017/18. Mignolet only played a couple of times last season and as he is 31-years-old now, he is getting towards the end of his career. The former Sunderland player shouldn’t be happy to sit on the sidelines and watch Alisson play every week – he should be looking to move on. Liverpool fans will surely be pleased for Mignolet if he does find a new club where he can be the first choice shot-stopper, he’s definitely good enough to play for a decent club. It’s unlikely that other Premier League teams would want him as most of them have their goalkeepers locked in for next term, so a move abroad could be on the cards for Mignolet.
