Liverpool need to get Divock Origi tied down to a new contract as soon as possible to avoid losing him to Real Betis this summer.

According to Spanish news outlet Estadio Deportivo, the Reds are willing to listen to offers for the 25-year-old because his current contract expires at the end of next season and La Liga side Real Betis have become alerted to his situation at Anfield.

Although Origi only made 21 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool and started just four Premier League matches, it is imperative that Michael Edwards gets the Belgium international tied down to a new contract. Why? Because he proved last season that he is the man that rises to the biggest of occasions and is the perfect back-up player for a club gunning for major honours.

It’s a fact that most clubs have players who are just on the fringes of their first team, simply because they’re not as good as those that are in the starting line-up.

Origi isn’t as good as Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane – that goes without the need to pull up stats on the four Liverpool attackers – but he is a solid back-up choice for any of those.

Although his game-time was limited to just seven starts last term, the ex-Lille forward still scored seven goals. And it’s not like his goals came in unimportant matches.

Origi scored off the bench to win all three points in the Merseyside derby against Everton, he scored an 86th winner against Newcastle in the penultimate league game of the season to keep Liverpool’s title hopes alive.

He also helped the Reds make history in the Champions League as he netted twice in the 4-0 win against Barcelona in the second leg of the semi-final and then rounded off the 2-0 win against Tottenham in the final in Madrid.

Why should Liverpool let this player leave? Just look at what he did for them last season, even though he started just seven matches in all competitions.

Real Betis would be playing a blinder if they snapped up the Belgium international, but Liverpool simply cannot allow that to happen.

They need to keep Origi and they need to stop him from being able to leave on a free transfer next summer when his contract expires.

Based on what he did last term, Origi could score the goal that wins Liverpool their first Premier League title in under a years time.
