Liverpool have made a “good contract offer” to Divock Origi and are awaiting a response from the Belgian striker, according to HLN journalist Kristof Terreur.

The 24-year-old wrote his name into Anfield legend with vital goals in the Champions League semi-final and final last season, helping the Reds to scoop up their sixth European title.

And it is understood that they are looking to extend the £45,000-a-week [Spotrac] ace’s stay on Merseyside.

Writing on his personal Twitter, Terreur said: “Liverpool and Divock Origi’s people had positive talks about a new contract just before the player went on holiday.

“There’s a good contract offer on the table now.

“Up to the player to take a decision when he returns from holiday.”

OPINION

This all sounds very positive, truth be told. Origi always had the potential to be an important player for the Reds, but up until last season, he has completely failed to realise it. Now, however, after some vitally important interventions, including a trio of European that will forever write his name into the annals of Kop history, it is easy to see why the club are keen to hang on to the Belgian. He’s probably never going to displace Roberto Firmino at the point of attack, but there are far worse options to have coming off the bench than a man with 26 international caps and a goal every 95 minutes last season [Transfermarkt]. Obviously, the decision now rests with Origi, and the question remains as to whether he sees his future battling for a place with the Reds, or whether he believes he would be better suited moving on to become the top dog at a smaller club. You would hope it’s the former.
