Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor has pinpointed Reds youngster Rhian Brewster as the next big thing to come out of Anfield.

There have been plenty of young players making the step up at Anfield over the years, with Trent Alexander-Arnold the biggest recent success story, but Mellor feels Brewster could go on and achieve similar things to Borussia Dortmund star Jason Sancho.

“I suppose the obvious one would be Rhian Brewster who had an untimely injury for a year but a Golden Boot winner in the U17 World Cup team, but you see [Callum] Hudson-Odoi who burst onto the scene from that team, so did Jadon Sancho,” he told American Gambler.

“Brewster has a big future if he can listen to Jurgen [Klopp] and the coaches at Liverpool, and the senior players there. Brewster is the one who really excites me because he can score goals, has the right attitude and listens to the coaching staff and Jurgen.”

OPINION

There’s no doubt that Brewster is the most talented young player coming out of Liverpool at the moment. He is someone who Klopp rates really highly and by all accounts is looking to involve in the first team picture next season. That’s the next step for Brewster now that he is fully fit and back in amongst it. He was in and around the first team squad after recovering from injury towards the back end of this campaign, and so this pre season will be big for him. He needs to kick on and show the German that he is ready to make an impact at the highest level next time out. Whether he can go on to replicate the successes of Hudson-Odoi and Sancho remains to be seen, but he certainly has the potential to do something similar. Brewster is in the right place, anyway, to make the most of his undoubted talent. You just have to look at what Klopp has done with Alexander-Arnold to see how well he develops young players. Perhaps Brewster will be the next one to make an impact.
