Former England international Danny Mills believes that Scottish giants Rangers will seal the signing of Liverpool winger Ryan Kent this summer.
The 22-year-old spent a phenomenal season on loan at Ibrox this term, and BBC pundit Mills feels that he will end up in Glasgow again ahead of other contenders for his signature, such as Leeds United.
“I think Steven Gerrard has more sway than Marcelo Bielsa in this situation,” he told Football Insider. “Kent did well at Rangers last season, Gerrard rates him highly and knows him from Liverpool. There is likely to be a bit of hero worship of Gerrard from the player.
“He had a decent time in Scotland last season and he is a top young player. Rangers want to sign him permanently or on loan, and I think they have a very good chance. He would be a fabulous addition to the Rangers squad. He has had a decent time in Scotland already, and it looks like another loan deal.”
You’d think that if it came down to Kent to choose between a return to Rangers or a spell on loan at Leeds then he would almost certainly pick the former. The Englishman enjoyed a tremendous campaign with the Ibrox outfit and was voted the Scottish Premiership’s Young Player of the Season. He will obviously love Gerrard, as a Liverpool lad, and already knows that he gets on with the squad and is guaranteed regular football. So it makes sense that Mills would position them as the favourites for Kent’s signature. However, surely it all comes down to what Liverpool want to do? Will they decide to loan him out again? And if so, will they favour continuity in Scotland or a spell somewhere else, perhaps in the Premier League? Or will they simply opt to sell him this summer while his value is high, likely pricing out both of these teams? And you never know, they could choose to keep him around the Reds first team squad. That seems unlikely, but you never know. Still, Jurgen Klopp holds all the cards here.
