Liverpool left back Alberto Moreno was offered a bumper new contract to try and keep him at the club, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that the Spaniard was handed fresh terms by the Reds, but that he turned them down because he wants to start a new adventure elsewhere.

It was announced earlier this summer that the former Sevilla man will leave the club after five years of service when his contract expires at the end of this month.

OPINION

This is a bit of a surprise, in all honesty. Moreno was clearly way down the pecking order at Anfield last season, firmly behind Andrew Robertson in the left back stakes, but also beaten out by midfielder James Milner for starts on several occasions. Clearly Jurgen Klopp doesn’t quite trust the 26-year-old. Despite that, it seems he was willing to offer him a lucrative new deal to keep him at the club moving forward. Obviously they like the Spaniard as a depth option. He’s never going to start ahead of Robertson when they’re both fit, but he’s a decent back up option on the left hand side of the defence. Still, he’s made his decision now and he obviously wants to go and play regular football elsewhere. You can’t blame him for that after playing second fiddle to the Scotland captain for the past 18 months or so. You can see why Liverpool decided to make him an offer to stick around, but overall it’s probably best for everyone if he moves on.
