Former Manchester United and Everton star Wayne Rooney believes Rangers boss Steven Gerrard could become Liverpool manager ‘over the next few years’.

With Frank Lampard in well-publicised talks over a return to Chelsea as manager, speculation has inevitably raged over when Gerrard could take the reins at Anfield.

Rooney believes his former England teammate will eventually be in charge at Liverpool: “I’m sure at some stage over the next few years Steven will get that opportunity at Liverpool,” he told Sky Sports.

OPINION

It certainly appears to be the time for sentimental returns to old clubs, doesn’t it? Obviously the talk about Lampard returning to the west of London has many people speculating on when Gerrard could get his chance with his old flame, but he has a job to do at Rangers at the moment and Jurgen Klopp is firmly entrenched as the main man on Merseyside. The German has just lifted the Champions League trophy with the Reds, so no one is clamouring for him to make way for the prodigal son any time soon. However, the prevailing wisdom is that when Klopp does decide to leave Liverpool, there is only one man who is going to take his place. That will depend on what Gerrard achieves north of the border, of course, and he is an in-work manager, so this is all speculation that is up in the air at this moment in time. However, you’d be surprised if Rooney’s prediction doesn’t come true in the years to come.
