Teenage centre back Sepp van den Berg will have a medical on Wednesday ahead of a move to Liverpool, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The newspaper claims that the Reds have won the race for the highly rated Dutch prospect, ahead of Bayern Munich and Ajax who were both desperate to sign him.

Liverpool have convinced the PEC Zwolle starlet to make the switch to Anfield for £1.79million, despite Sampdoria having a £2.25million bid rejected for him in January.

The 17-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract, which accounts for the Reds getting him on the cheap. Van Den Berg appeared 16 times for PEC’s first team this season.

OPINION

It’s always good to snap up hot young talent, and Van Den Berg certainly falls under that category. As per WhoScored, he averaged 1.3 tackles per game, 0.8 interceptions per game, 2.7 clearances per game and won 0.7 offsides per game. Clearly he isn’t afraid of getting in amongst it, despite his tremendous youth. It always seems to take longer for young centre backs to emerge at first team level, due to the phenomenal responsibility placed on that position. So for Van Den Berg to make the breakthrough in the Eredivisie at such a young age in such a tough position on the pitch is a great credit to him. Liverpool are well set for centre backs, at the moment, but you always need to find diamonds in the rough that you can develop into top class players. That’s what the Reds did with Joe Gomez and now it seems as if they are trying to do the same thing with Van Den Berg.
