Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has heaped praise on defensive partner Andrew Robertson, saying the Scotsman had his “best season ever”.

Robertson, who cemented his place at left-back in the Liverpool team in his second full campaign at the club last term, was influential in the Reds earning 97 Premier League points and a sixth Champions League trophy.

The 25-year-old finished the season with 13 assists in all competitions and, speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Van Dijk hailed the impact of his teammate and others in the side.

“I have been consistent. I’ve been feeling great, with the help – obviously – of all my teammates. But everyone has been fantastic,” the Netherlands captain said.

“If you look around the team, Robbo has had his best season ever. Trent has been amazing for such a young guy, so mature. And all the centre-backs. And obviously the rest of the team have been performing at such a high level.”

OPINION

Van Dijk is spot on with these comments here. There is no doubt about it, Liverpool’s back four has become one of the best in Europe. Van Dijk is obviously the star man due to how he has come in and made the Reds so much better at keeping teams out, but Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are fantastic both going forward and defensively too. They have the perfect balance – they are able to go forward and help the team score goals when they need to, but they are also not scared to get back and get stuck in when needs be. However, while the first-choice full-backs are fantastic, Jurgen Klopp’s side now need to add cover. It looks as though right-back Nathaniel Clyne is set to leave following his loan to Bournemouth, while Alberto Moreno will also leave, meaning the club need more additions in those positions if they are to maintain their current level.
