Liverpool offered Dembele

|

Liverpool have been offered the opportunity to sign Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele, according to TEAMtalk.

The Frenchman signed for the Catalan giants from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, but has struggled with injuries in the two years since, and is believed to be ushered towards the exit door in Spain as Barca look to recoup some money after spending big on Frenkie De Jong and closing in on a deal for Antoine Griezmann.

The Reds were not planning on making any significant kind of outlay, according to the report, but it’s understood that the 22-year-old is a major long term target for Jurgen Klopp.

OPINION

This would be massive for Liverpool were they to pull it off. Dembele would very much fall under the category of a luxury signing, but he has so much potential that it would be hard to turn down a move were he genuinely available. Aside from anything else, even though he would be a huge expenditure that most people would see as somewhat frivolous, he would also bring some much needed depth in attacking areas. Capable of playing on either flank, he would be the perfect cover for, and competition to, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane. Rhian Brewster looks to be Klopp’s preferred option in a central role when it comes to covering Roberto Firmino, but out wide, the Reds still look a little bit thin. Demebele would definitely solve that issue. Whether Liverpool can justify spending such an exorbitant amount of money on a player who is not guaranteed to start every game, however, is another question entirely.
