PEC Zwolle defender Sepp ven den Berg has flown to England to seal his “dream” move to Liverpool as the Reds feel they are stamping their mark as a European powerhouse with his capture, according to De Telegraaf.

The Dutch newspaper claim on their website that the 6’2″ [Transfermarkt] defender jetted into London on Tuesday evening alongside his agent and parents to finalise a switch worth an initial £1.7million, having found himself at the heart of a battle among some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The report states that Liverpool are feeling proud of themselves to have defeated Bayern Munich to his capture and that by trumping the German heavyweights they have made a statement of intent over their credentials as a powerhouse of club football.

Opinion

The real statement of intent from Liverpool was winning the Champions League, not signing a 17-year-old footballer. Still, you can understand why the Reds are quite happy to have won this particular transfer battle. Bayern are a massive draw for any young player on the European stage, offering the opportunity to regularly challenge for domestic titles in a competitive league as well as pose a constant threat to their Champions League opposition. Liverpool are back as one of the big boys of world football, their European success cementing their place among the elite, and so it should come as little surprise that they are able to tempt young and exciting talents to Anfield. Whether van den Berg has what it takes to be a regular starter for the Merseyside outfit any time soon remains to be seen, but you need only look at the clubs keen on snapping up his capture to see he has plenty of potential at his fingertips – or should that be toes?
