COMMENTARY
Some Liverpool fans were left recalling how Virgil Van Dijk ended up at Anfield after Melissa Reddy reported on the club’s chances of signing Lille attacker Nicolas Pepe. The journalist reported on ESPN that the Reds had not discussed signing the 24-year-old with the French club despite claims saying they were. Reddy stated that Liverpool’s sporting director Michael Edwards personally reached out to Lille manager Christophe Galtier in June in order to tell him the Reds had no interest in signing Pepe, and added that Liverpool felt they were being used to inflate the player’s value. While this report should have crushed any hope fans had that the attacker was about to arrive, it actually did the opposite and convinced some fans that a deal was possible. Some Liverpool fans pointed out that the club previously went on the record to state they had ended their interest in Van Dijk, only to sign him from Southampton in the following window. While it does seem the Reds fans below are clutching at straws, as Reddy is a reliable source, you can never rule out anything in the transfer window.
